What is 5G RAN (Radio Access Network)?

The 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) is the part of a mobile network that provides the wireless connection between user equipment, such as smartphones, connected devices and industrial equipment, and the wider mobile network.

The RAN manages radio communication over the air interface between user equipment and the base station. It then carries control signalling and user data towards the core network through the operator’s transport infrastructure.

A 5G RAN includes logical base-station functions known as gNodeBs, or gNBs, together with radio units, antenna systems, processing platforms and transport connectivity. A gNB may be implemented as an integrated base station or divided into components such as a Central Unit and one or more Distributed Units. These components may be deployed across different physical locations and computing platforms.

More generally, the 3GPP-defined Next Generation Radio Access Network, or NG-RAN, can include both New Radio Node Bs (gNBs or gNodeBs) providing 5G New Radio access and ng-eNBs providing evolved LTE access connected to the 5G Core.

5G RAN is designed to support higher data rates, lower radio-interface latency, greater capacity and more connected devices than previous generations of mobile technology. These capabilities are supported by technologies such as:

  • Wider radio channel bandwidths
  • Massive MIMO
  • Beamforming
  • Carrier aggregation
  • Flexible numerology
  • Advanced modulation and coding
  • Sophisticated radio-resource management

The performance achieved by an individual network depends on factors including the available spectrum, channel bandwidth, frequency band, radio conditions, cell loading, antenna configuration, device capabilities and network design.

The RAN also contributes to end-to-end capabilities such as network slicing by providing slice-aware admission control, radio-resource management and QoS treatment in coordination with the 5G Core and network-management systems.

A 5G RAN may be implemented using an integrated, centralised, virtualised or Open RAN architecture.

What is the difference between 5G RAN and the 5G Core?

The 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) provides the wireless connection between user equipment and the mobile network. It manages functions including radio transmission and reception, scheduling, radio-resource management, mobility between cells, beam management and the application of radio QoS.

The 5G Core provides functions including:

  • Authentication and security
  • Access and mobility management
  • PDU Session management
  • Policy control
  • Network-slice selection
  • Subscriber-data management
  • Service exposure
  • User-plane packet forwarding and traffic steering

The RAN includes radio equipment, antenna systems, transport connectivity and software-based processing functions. These processing functions may run on dedicated hardware, virtual machines, containers or cloud-based infrastructure.

The 5G Core comprises logical network functions such as the AMF, SMF and UPF. These functions run on underlying computing and networking infrastructure and are commonly implemented using virtualised or cloud-native platforms.

In a 5G Standalone deployment, a gNB connects directly to the 5G Core through the NG interface. Together, the user equipment, NG-RAN and 5G Core form the 5G System.

5G New Radio can also be used in Non-Standalone deployments. In the most widely deployed NSA architecture, LTE provides the master radio and control-plane connection, while the network continues to use the 4G Evolved Packet Core.

What is Open RAN (O-RAN), and is it covered in 5G RAN training?

Open RAN is an approach to building disaggregated radio access networks using open and standardised interfaces designed to support interoperability between components from different suppliers.

Traditional RAN deployments commonly use an integrated base-station stack from a single supplier within a particular site, region or network layer. Open RAN aims to make it easier for operators to select radio, processing, software and cloud components from different suppliers.

Open RAN does not introduce a new 5G air interface and does not inherently guarantee higher speeds, lower latency, greater capacity or lower costs. Its potential benefits include increased vendor choice, deployment flexibility, programmable RAN control and greater competition within the supply chain. Actual interoperability, performance and cost depend on system design, integration, testing, optimisation and operational requirements.
