What is 5G Standalone (5G SA)?
5G Standalone, commonly abbreviated to 5G SA, uses 5G New Radio connected directly to a 5G Core.
Unlike the most widely deployed form of 5G Non-Standalone, 5G SA does not require LTE and the 4G Evolved Packet Core to act as the access and core-network anchor. Instead, it uses a dedicated 5G Core based on a Service-Based Architecture, commonly implemented using virtualised or cloud-native technologies.
A 5G SA deployment may still share sites, transport networks, spectrum, operational systems and other infrastructure with existing 4G networks. It may also support mobility and interworking between the 5G System and the 4G Evolved Packet System.
Mobile network operators around the world are continuing to deploy and expand 5G Standalone networks.
What is the difference between 5G Standalone and 5G Non-Standalone?
The main difference between 5G Standalone and the most commonly deployed form of 5G Non-Standalone is how the radio access and core network are connected.
In a typical 5G NSA deployment, LTE provides the master radio and control-plane anchor, while the network continues to use the 4G Evolved Packet Core. 5G New Radio is added to provide additional radio capacity and performance.
In 5G SA, 5G New Radio connects directly to a dedicated 5G Core. This enables capabilities including native network slicing, more advanced service differentiation, improved support for edge deployments and potentially lower latency.
Actual performance depends on factors including spectrum, radio configuration, network loading, transport design, UPF location, QoS configuration and the location of application servers. As a result, 5G SA does not automatically provide higher peak speeds than 5G NSA in every deployment.
Why is 5G Standalone important for telecoms professionals?
5G Standalone (SA) removes reliance on legacy network infrastructures and opens up new opportunities and use cases for mobile network technologies. 5G SA allows:
- Network Slicing - Network slicing allows a mobile network to provide multiple logical networks with capabilities and characteristics tailored to different services, customers or applications.
- Slices may be designed to support different performance, security, availability or isolation requirements. However, performance is determined by the resources allocated to the slice, network configuration, orchestration, admission control and any associated service-level agreement.
- Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) - 5G SA can provide the architecture required to support services with stringent latency and reliability requirements:
- The successful delivery of Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications depends on the complete end-to-end system, including the device, radio access network, spectrum, transport network, 5G Core, edge or application platform and QoS configuration.
- Potential applications include industrial control, robotics, remote expert assistance, cooperative transport services and other time-sensitive communications.
- Massive IoT (mMTC) - 5G networks can support very high densities of connected devices for massive machine-type communication use cases.
