Within the 3GPP’s UDC (User Data Convergence) architectural framework, the AFE serves as the lightweight front end access to the Unified Data Repository. For example, for an MSC-S to access subscriber data stored in the UDR, it must communicate with the HLR AFE. Similarly, for the MME to access subscriber data, it must communicate with the HSS AFE.
