AFE Application Front End
Within the 3GPP's UDC (User Data Convergence) architectural framework, the AFE serves as the lightweight front end access to the Unified Data Repository. For example, for an MSC-S to access subscriber data stored in the UDR, it must communicate with the HLR AFE. Similarly, for the MME to access subscriber data, it must communicate with the HSS AFE.
