NFV - Network Functions Virtualization

NFV is a general term given to the process of implementing what would traditionally be a standalone piece of hardware eg MME, P-GW, SGSN, etc as software running on a virtual machine. The virtualized network element would be termed a VNF (Virtualised Network Function) and in a typical NFV scenario, several VNFs can run on the same physical hardware. The hardware itself is termed the Host Function. NFV has the potential for significantly reducing CAPEX and OPEX costs for the service provider.
