- IMS Standards and Alternatives - 3GPP, ETSI TISPAN, 3GPP2.
Section 2: IMS Architecture (2 hours)
- Positioning the IMS.
- IMS Key Requirements.
- IMS Control and User Plane.
- IMS Key Nodes - P-CSCF, I-CSCF, S-CSCF, HSS, AS.
- IMS Supporting Nodes - SLF, MRF, BGCF, IBCF, IM-ALG, TrGW, ISC and SCIM.
Section 3: Session Initiation Protocol (1.5 hours)
- SIP Capabilities.
- SIP Identities and Functional Elements - AoR, Proxy, Registrar, Redirect.
- Methods - Register, Invite, Ack, Cancel, Bye, Options.
- SIP Registration and Registration Security.
- SIP Session Establishment.
- Defining the Media Stream with Session Description Protocol.
- Where appropriate, network traces and associated exercises will feature throughout the section to enhance understanding.
Section 4: SIP Enhancements (1.5 hours)

Service Providers are currently in a transition phase within their networks, migrating from a predominantly circuit switched architecture to an end to end packet switched solution. This course defines the 3GPP IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) architecture, a service management network which relies on SIP to establish, maintain and terminate multimedia sessions across a variety of IP based access networks. This course will focus on the incentives for, the architecture behind and the overall operation of the IMS, including a detailed discussion on the use of SIP to facilitate this architecture.
