The MSC is fundamentally a 64Kbps telephone exchange responsible for switching circuits between mobile subscribers and the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) or other MSC. Therefore, the MSC is very similar to a standard 64Kbps telecommunications switch with the exception that it must communicate with specific mobility databases.
