A DoS (Denial of Service) does not aim to attack the integrity or privacy afforded to data, but attempts to degrade the service offered to end users. A typical form of DoS is when a router is bombarded with PING (Packet Internet Gopher) messages, or when a VPN (Virtual Private Network) router, supporting IPSec (IP Security), is subject to a continual stream of forged IPSec packets.
