Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is a TCP/IP protocol that enables a personal computer or workstation to get temporary or permanent IP addresses from a pool on a centrally-administered server. Like its predecessor, BOOTP (Boot Protocol), DHCP provides a mechanism for allocating IP addresses manually, automatically and dynamically. This enables IP addresses to be reused.
