WiMAX Radio Planning Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces WiMAX Radio Planning. This eSeminar introduces the key issues when planning a WiMAX network prior to defining the mix of services which need to be supported. The process of dimensioning, link budget calculation, coverage planning and capacity planning are all explored, as well as the concept of permutation zones and full and fractional / partial frequency planning.

Who Should Attend

Radio Engineers requiring a technical appreciation of WiMAX radio planning. Project and Technical Managers involved in the deployment of WiMAX systems.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Why WiMAX Radio Planning? (1 hour)

This first section summarizes the need for WiMAX planning, as well as the different implementation scenarios, such as fixed and mobile deployment. The various stages involved in deploying a WiMAX system are examined, including dimensioning, planning and optimization. In addition, the mix of services which need to be supported, as well as their impact in the planning process are discussed.

  • WiMAX deployment - implementation scenarios.
  • Planning stages - dimensioning, planning and optimization.
  • WiMAX services - VoIP, WWW, HTTP, gaming, video, etc.

Section 2: WiMAX Coverage Planning (1 hour)

This section explores system dimensioning and the calculation of WiMAX link budgets. It also discusses maximum path loss and the resultant cell range calculations, as well as the cell / site area and site to site distance. In so doing, methods for calculating the required number of Base Stations is also examined. The section then utilizes planning tool screen shots to summarize the key aspects of WiMAX Coverage Planning.

  • Dimensioning - link budget calculation.
  • Coverage planning - nominal plan and propagation models.
  • Tools and mapping information.

Section 3: Capacity Planning and Features (1 hour)

The final section examines the issues with capacity planning, as well as future loading requirements. This includes a summary of the various simulations, whereby multiple users with a mix of services load the system. The various enhancements / features to improve capacity and coverage are also explored, and the simulation results illustrated.

  • WiMAX capacity planning.
  • Simulations - key plots and KPI’s.
  • WiMAX enhancements and features - MIMO, AMC, etc.
