WiMAX Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces WiMAX. Through an examination of WiMAX standards, the network architecture and air interface a complete picture of WiMAX is built up. Finally, all the aspects are drawn together through discussion of WiMAX operation. This details how the device connects to the network, the security measures employed, staying connected while mobile and how IP services are delivered.

Who Should Attend

Engineers and Technical Staff who require a detailed insight into the workings of WiMAX. Sales Teams whose remit includes technical aspects of the WiMAX solution.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Key Elements of the WiMAX Network (1 hour)

This section introduces the concepts of WiMAX and its development under the coordination of the WiMAX Forum. It provides a detailed description of the elements and functions that make up a typical WiMAX network and includes discussion of WiMAX certification, the role of the BS and ASN Gateway and the functions supporting operation within the CSN.

  • WiMAX Interoperability - WiMAX Standards and Certification.
  • The WiMAX Access Network - The BS and ASN Gateway.
  • The WiMAX Core - CSN Functions and Databases.

Section 2: WiMAX Air Interface OFDM and OFDMA (1 hour)

WiMAX is one of the first mobile technologies to employ an OFDM based air interface to harness the spectral efficiency and performance of this multiplexing technique. This section introduces the concepts of OFDM and OFDMA and shows how the WiMAX physical frames are used to support the various control and packet channels across the air.

  • OFDM / OFDMA - FFT, IFFT, Subcarriers, PUSC and FUSC.
  • Control Channels - MAPs and Channel Descriptors.
  • MAC - CIDs, Management Messages and User Frames.

Section 3: WiMAX network Operation (1 hour)

Building on the WiMAX architecture this section draws a conclusion through a discussion of WiMAX Operation. Initial procedures including network acquisition and entry are outlined, as well as security considerations and the establishment of WiMAX service flows to support VoIP, Video and other multimedia services.

  • WiMAX Initial Procedures - Network Acquisition and Entry.
  • Getting Connected - AAA, Service Flows and Mobility.
  • Services - Policy, Billing, VoIP and Multimedia Delivery.
