UMTS Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces UMTS and its evolution towards HSPA+. This eSeminar begins by focusing on the network architecture and in particular the UTRAN. It then explains the term CDMA and why this access technology was selected for 3G based networks. UMTS operation is then described prior to exploring how the technology is evolving through HSPA+ and the introduction of Femto Cells.

Who Should Attend

Mobile Device and Network Engineers requiring an understanding of UMTS and its mode of operation. Technical Staff involved in the management and deployment of a UMTS network.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: The UMTS Network (1 hour)

Beginning with a brief market review, this eSeminar introduces the UMTS network before focusing on the key network elements which comprise the UTRAN. As such, the terms Node B and RNC are introduced, in addition to the various interfaces which span the network. The role of ATM is explained prior to briefly outlining the migration to IP.

  • UMTS - a market appraisal.
  • UTRAN functionality - Node B and RNC.
  • Network interfaces and the migration to IP.

Section 2: The UMTS Air Interface and CDMA (1 hour)

This section begins by explaining the principles of CDMA as used within UMTS. This includes a description of the different codes in operation; synchronization, scrambling and spreading before explaining how these are utilized within a network. The section then moves on to briefly review some of the issues which affect typical deployments and UMTS radio planning.

  • CDMA and its use in UMTS.
  • Codes - synchronization, scrambling and spreading.
  • Channels - radio planning and deployment issues.

Section 3: Network Operation and Evolution (1 hour)

The final section explains how a mobile detects and attaches to a UMTS network. It then moves on, through the use of real network traces, to describe how a call is established across the network. Handovers are then briefly addressed and the terms Soft and Softer handover explained. Finally, the eSeminar culminates with a high level review of UMTS Evolution and in particular HSPA+ and Femto Cells.

  • Initial procedures - cell selection / reselection.
  • Network operation - call setup and mobility.
  • Network evolution - HSPA+ and Femto Cells.
