UMA Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces UMA and Dual Mode operation. This eSeminar introduces the key aspects of UMA and the benefits and challenges of adopting such an approach. It then moves on to explain how UMA operates alongside both GSM / GPRS and UMTS and in so doing explains the terms Discovery and Registration before finally explaining how mobility is supported.

Who Should Attend

Project Managers involved in the deployment of UMA within an existing cellular network. Mobile Device and Network Engineers requiring a technical appreciation of UMA and Dual Mode operation.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: What is UMA? (1 hour)

The eSeminar begins by explaining what is meant by the term UMA and its relationship to the 3GPP’s GAN specifications. It then moves on to outline the benefits experienced by service providers who have deployed a UMA based solution before comparing and contrasting it with Femto Cells. The section then culminates with a brief analysis of Wi-Fi and its role within UMA.

  • What is UMA?
  • The benefits of UMA - a market appraisal.
  • Wi-Fi and its role in UMA.

Section 2: UMA Operation (1 hour)

This section begins by explaining the significance of the Discovery and Registration procedures through analysis of real network traces. The section then explores the procedures used to support both mobile originated / terminated call setup over UMA, prior to describing the significance of VoIP and RTP, RTCP and AMR. The section concludes with a brief explanation of how packet switching is supported.

  • UMA discovery and registration.
  • Call setup - mobile originated and mobile terminated.
  • VoIP - RTP, RTCP and AMR.

Section 3: UMA Mobility (1 hour)

The final section introduces the terms “Rove In” and “Rove Out” and in so doing, describes how mobility is supported within UMA. Using real network traces, the procedures undertaken to hand a mobile into and out of UMA are described for both GSM and UMTS. Finally, the section briefly reviews the issues associated with emergency call support.

  • Handover to UMA - GSM and UMTS.
  • Handover from UMA - GSM and UMTS.
  • Supporting emergency calls.
