Mobile TV Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces Mobile TV. It charts the standardization of the radio interface, which is key to interoperability as well as providing a comprehensive overview of the supporting functional network architecture. The eSeminar also explores the concepts of interactive Mobile TV through discussion of features such as televoting, SMS interaction etc.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Mobile TV Standards (1 hour)

To ensure interoperability between mobile devices and network services, much work has been done by the standards groups to define the physical radio interface to support Mobile TV. This section explores the main standards that are being deployed across the world regions. These include DVB-H, DMB and STIMI.

  • Mobile TV Air Interface - the basic principles.
  • Standards - what will be deployed?
  • A closer look - DVB-H, DMB and STIMI.

Section 2: Network Solutions (1 hour)

Delivery of Mobile TV may be either through broadcast, unicast, multicast or a mixture of these techniques. This section examines the merits and drawbacks of these approaches. Through this discussion the main functions employed to support Mobile TV are described, as well as the likely solutions that will be implemented by service providers.

  • How to deliver? - broadcast, multicast or unicast.
  • Mobile TV - the functional architecture.
  • Which will it be? - key drawbacks and advantages.

Section 3: Operation and Service Delivery (1 hour)

How does the subscriber connect for Mobile TV services, what services are available and what value added services can be offered? This section looks at end-to-end operation of a typical Mobile TV solution as well as value added services such as televoting, SMS interaction etc.
