MPLS Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces the fundamental aspects of Multi Protocol Label Switching. Accordingly, the course begins with an overview of why MPLS has been adopted as a transport technology by numerous telecoms service providers around the world. In addition, the concepts of Label Switched Paths and Traffic Engineering will be examined before analyzing some additional attributes of MPLS.

Who Should Attend

Telecoms Engineers requiring a detailed insight into the operation and principles behind an MPLS transport network. IT Professionals seeking an understanding of how MPLS impacts IP networks.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Why MPLS? (1 hour)

This introductory section explores where MPLS came from in terms of the disadvantages of carrying IP over an ATM network with respect to overhead, operating speed and configuration. The key MPLS terminology will be provided, explaining the role of Label Edge and Switching Routers. Moreover, the procedures behind label designation and allocation will be discussed.

  • Motivation for deploying MPLS.
  • MPLS key terminology - LER, LSR, LSP, Pop, Push, Swap.
  • MPLS operation including MPLS switching tables.

Section 2: MPLS LSPs and Traffic Engineering (1 hour)

Once the concept of a Label Switched Path is conveyed, this section will describe the techniques used in MPLS networks in order to actually establish LSPs. This will include an analysis of the Label Distribution Protocol, as well as describing the advantages that Traffic Engineering has for a network operator. Included in this will be a discussion on how TE LSP are created.

  • Label Distribution using LDP.
  • Advantages of Traffic Engineering.
  • Traffic Engineered LSP using RSVP-TE.

Section 3: MPLS Features (1 hour)

MPLS brings a number of additional benefits other than Traffic Engineering, a selection of which are detailed in the concluding section. As such, support for QoS across MPLS networks is an important requirement, as is the provision of suitable protection and restoration across MPLS. These, along with the potentially lucrative VPN capabilities of MPLS will all be examined.

  • Support for DiffServ QoS marking.
  • Protection and Restoration through MPLS Fast Reroute.
  • MPLS Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPN provision.
