IPTV Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces the key aspects of IPTV. As such, this eSeminar initially analyzes the end-to-end IPTV network architecture, tracking the video content as it is created and packetized at the Super Head End and eventually delivered to the Home Gateway. Moreover, the characteristics and requirements of Multicast and VoD IPTV are examined, in addition to the challenges associated with IPTV roll out.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: IPTV Network Architecture (1 hour)

This initial section will examine the IPTV network architecture on an end to end basis, detailing the features of Super and Regional Head Ends, in addition to listing the responsibilities of the Home Gateway or Set Top Box. As such, the notion of media capture, encoding using MPEG2 / MPEG4, packetization and delivery will be examined.

  • Core network - SHE, RHE, capture and playout process.
  • Access network - xDSL, FTTx, PON.
  • Terminal device - standards, features, technologies.

Section 2: Multicast and Video on Demand (1 hour)

The next section looks at how content will be delivered to the subscriber in both the Multicast and VoD scenario. As such, Internet Group Management Protocol and Protocol Independent Multicast will be examined as the key protocols for facilitating Multicast content delivery. Likewise, Real Time Streaming Protocol will be explained in terms of VoD control.

  • IGMP - Versions, Membership Reports and Queries.
  • PIM - Join and Prune, SSM.
  • RTSP - Describe, Setup, Play, Pause, Teardown etc.

Section 3: IPTV Challenges (1 hour)

This concluding section analyzes a selection of the key challenges faced by IPTV service providers. As such, Quality of Service / Experience provision is examined, showing the techniques used to provide and test QoS. In addition, IP network security is also examined, analyzing the current threat climate and detailing security tools pertinent to IPTV.

  • QoS / QoE - IntServ, DiffServ, subjective and objective testing.
  • Security - current threat climate, encryption, CAS, DRM.
  • Challenges summary - bandwidth, standards, content etc.
