IP Security Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces IP Network Security. As such, this eSeminar will catalogue the current threat climate, providing a detailed overview of what the current threats are and also the associated mechanisms for facilitating these threats. In addition, network security with respect to IP Next Generation Networks will be examined, with content also provided on the Defence-in-Depth security model.

Who Should Attend

Telecoms Engineers concerned with how IP security will affect the roll out of Next Generation Networks. Technical Decision makers requiring an understanding of the current security climate.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: The Threat Climate (1 hour)

This initial section is designed to provide a concise overview of the threats currently faced by IP based transport networks. Included in this is a description of popular Malware delivery mechanisms and also an appreciation of how NGN can be vulnerable to attacks such as DDoS. The section will also provide a list of the top 10 threats predicted for 2009.

  • Current Malware trends including new delivery techniques.
  • Botnets and DDoS attacks.
  • Top 10 threats such as social networking, pharming etc.

Section 2: Securing Traffic in NGN (1 hour)

The second section moves on to discuss how NGN networks can be secured against potential attack, analyzing the specific techniques employed to protect NGN signalling and media. In addition, hardware based techniques are also examined, showing how tools such as the SBC (Session Border Controller) can be used to protect network boundaries.

  • Attack techniques specific to NGN eg Registration Hijack.
  • Tools employed to protect NGN traffic - SIPs, SRTP, IPSec.
  • Network protection - SBC, ALG, Packet Scrubbing.

Section 3: Defence in Depth (1 hour)

This concluding section is designed to provide a comprehensive approach to deploying appropriate security, introducing the concept of a security strategy and showing how the Defence-in-Depth model is employed. As such, the various layers of the Defence in Depth model will be highlighted and explained accordingly.

  • Security Strategy - Policies, Assessment, Response, Review.
  • Defence in Depth and security layering.
  • Post attack recovery and procedures.
