HSPA+ Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces HSPA+. This eSeminar identifies the key aspects of HSPA+ prior to explaining how the system is modified to facilitate higher data rates. It then moves on to discuss the HSPA+ features and protocols in more detail, before finally dealing with operational procedures and mobility, as well as possible deployment scenarios.

Who Should Attend

Mobile and Network Engineers requiring a technical appreciation of HSPA+ operation. Project Managers and Technical Sales involved in the deployment of a HSPA+ network..

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Road to HSPA+ (1 hour)

The first section defines what is meant by HSPA+ and how it has evolved through various 3GPP releases. In so doing, it summarizes Release 5 to Release 8. In addition, the various benefits of HSPA+ are explored, as well as the typical data rates with comparison to other technologies. Finally, the HSPA+ Release 6/7/8 architectures are examined in conjunction with the various categories of HSPA+ devices.

  • 3GPP releases - The road to HSPA+.
  • Deployment option - The benefit of HSPA+.
  • Network architecture - Release 5/6/7/8 HSPA+./li>

Section 2: Downlink and Uplink Operation (1 hour)

This section examines both HSDPA and HSUPA detailing the enhancements to each, as well as the evolution to HSPA+. In doings so, methods and features are explored, such as the use of adaptive modulation and coding, HARQ, Fast Feedback, Scheduling, MIMO, Beamforming etc. Finally, the modification to protocols for HSPA+ are discussed.

  • HSPA+ features - e.g. HARQ, adaptive modulation and coding and efficient scheduling.
  • Advanced antennas - MIMO and Beamforming.
  • Release 5/6/7/8 Protocols - MAC and RRC updates.

Section 3: Connecting using HSPA+ (1 hour)

This section examines the procedures necessary to establish a PDP Context, as well as the identification of a device’s HSPA+ capabilities. The end to end operation is also discussed, in addition to the mechanisms to maintain the connection. Different scenarios are discussed; this includes the use of Femto Cells and the mobility between 2G and 3G systems.

  • HSPA+ session establishment.
  • Mobility scenarios for HSPA+.
  • Interworking with 2G Cells and Femto Cells.
