3G Radio Planning Explained (3 hours)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “Explained” series, this 3 hour eSeminar introduces 3G radio planning. The eSeminar discusses the stages when planning a UMTS network prior to defining the requirements of circuit and packet services. The process of dimensioning, link budget calculation, coverage planning and capacity planning are explored, along with issues of soft handovers, signalling, SMS and network loading.

Who Should Attend

Mobile and Network Engineers requiring a technical appreciation of UMTS radio planning. Project Managers and Technical Sales involved in the deployment of UMTS systems.

Synopsis

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: What is UMTS Radio Planning? (1 hour)

This section introduces UMTS radio planning and the various stages to planning a mobile cellular network. As such, the section explores 3G network dimensioning, planning and optimization, as well as discussing the issues of different types of traffic, namely AMR speech, signalling, SMS and packet switched services:

  • Planning Stages - dimensioning, planning and optimization.
  • Services - AMR, SMS and PS Data.
  • Mobility - handovers and interworking.

Section 2: Coverage Planning (1 hour)

This section details the coverage planning process and the use of macro, micro, and pico cells. The section then goes on to utilize these in the system dimensioning process and the calculation of link budgets. This is followed by the calculation of the cell range, as well as the cell / site area. Throughout the section, planning tool screen shots are used to summarize the key guidelines and mapping information:

  • Dimensioning - link budget calculation.
  • Coverage planning - nominal plan and propagation models.
  • Tools and Mapping Information.

Section 3: Capacity Planning and Optimization (1 hour)

The final section examines how capacity planning is performed in conjunction with coverage planning. The section includes a summary of capacity simulations, as well as key issues such as mobility and PS service. The various enhancements / features to improve capacity and coverage are also explored, and the simulation results illustrated:

  • 3G capacity planning - multimedia services.
  • Mobility issues - soft handovers and interworking.
  • Simulations - key plots and KPI's.
