Improving Coverage with Femto Cells (1 hour)

Forming part of mpirical’s acclaimed “The Essential Guide to” series, this 1 hour eSeminar examines the concept of Femto Cells and in so doing, discusses the benefits and challenges of adopting such a strategy. The eSeminar then moves on to explore the various components of a Femto Cell solution, before describing how Femto Cells operate and the techniques which may be adopted to improve network performance.

Divided into 3 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Why Femto Cells? (20 minutes)

As Mobile Service Providers seek to continually improve their service offering, this introductory section explains exactly what a Femto Cell is, before describing how the technology will integrate with existing cellular architectures. In light of alternative solutions to Femto Cells, Dual Mode operation is also discussed, prior to exploring the benefits and challenges of a Femto Cell deployment:

  • What are Femto Cells?
  • Femto Cells v Dual Mode Operation (UMA).
  • Benefits & challenges of a Femto Cell deployment.

Section 2: The Femto Cell Solution (20 minutes)

The second session begins be analysing the key functions of both the HNB (Home Node B) and HNB-GW (Home Node B Gateway), before describing how a Femto Cell may be incorporated with other household appliances such as an IPTV Set Top Box, Wi-Fi Access Point etc. to form the Home Gateway:

  • Femto Cell Architecture - HNB & HNB-GW.
  • IP within a Femto Cell network.
  • Femto Cell - Part of a home gateway solution.

Section 3: How Do Femto Cells Work? (20 minutes)

The final session briefly describes how normal cellular operation is maintained across a Femto Cell based network. Furthermore, some of the techniques to improve network performance are also reviewed, before finally discussing how mobility is supported for both handovers “into” and “out of” the Femto Cell network:

  • Making calls over the Femto Cell network.
  • Mobility - Moving “into” and “out of” the Femto Cell.
