Wi-Fi System Engineering (1 days or 6 hours)

Wi-Fi or more accurately IEEE 802.11 technology has become widespread over the past decade and can now be found in as diverse locations as trains and planes as well as in offices, homes, coffee shops, airports etc. This course sets out to explain how this technology operates through a combination of theory and practical exercises using protocol analysers to capture real network traces. It then discusses how the technology has been modified in order to improve security and support real time applications.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for Technical Staff involved in the development and deployment of Wi-Fi technology or Product Managers requiring a detailed insight into the operation of a Wi-Fi network.

Pre - Learning

Pre-Learning is provided to prime those attending the instructor led phase. Each lesson is based on an interactive online format and should take about 30 minutes to complete. The pre-Learning lessons are:

  • Wi-Fi Operation.

Course Outline

Divided into 5 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Network Architecture (1 hour)

  • Network Elements - Station, Wireless Medium, Access Point and Distribution System.
  • Network Configurations - Ad-hoc, LAN, Access and Mesh.
  • IEEE Physical Layers - 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11n.
  • OFDM and Spatial Multiplexing / MIMO.

Section 2: Contention Resolution & Framing (1.5 hours)

  • Contention Resolution - CSMA/CA, RTS, CTS and NAV.
  • Medium Access - DCF, PCF and Interframe Spacing (SIFS, RIFS, DIFS and PIFS).
  • IEEE 802.11 Frame Format and Addressing.
  • Interworking with Higher Layers - LLC, SNAP and IP.
  • Network Analysis - Enhanced learning through detailed analysis of real network traces.

Section 3: Network Operation (1.5 hours)

  • Operational States and Transitions - Authentication and Association.
  • Initial Procedures - Beacon Messages and Probe Request / Response.
  • Authentication - Open System and Shared Key.
  • Association, Re-association and Data Transfer.
  • Mobility and Portability - The Issues affecting true Wi-Fi Mobility.
  • System Enhancements - Power Saving (APSD) and Block Acknowledgements.

Section 4: Wi-Fi Security (1 hour)

  • Security Vulnerabilities - A brief overview of WEP.
  • Robust Security Networking - IEEE 802.11i and the Wi-Fi Alliance’s WPA/2.
  • IEEE 802.1x, Controlled / Uncontrolled Ports.
  • Enterprise Security - EAP, TLS, TTLS, PEAP, LEAP, EAP-SIM etc.
  • SoHo Security - EAPOL, TKIP and the associated weaknesses.
  • Frame Format Modifications.

Section 5: Wi-Fi Quality of Service (1 hour)

  • Why Quality of Service for Wi-Fi?
  • The Options - EDCA and HCCA.
  • Contention Based Access - AIFS, Access Categories and Contention Windows.
  • Controlled Access - Polling and TXOPs.
  • Controlling Quality of Service - ADDTS, Traffic Streams and TSPECs.
  • Direct Link Operation.
