LTE Essentials (1 day or 6 hours)

The growth of mobile broadband data and convergence of telecoms network architecture to IP are both setting service providers significant challenges. These challenges manifest themselves both from a technical and commercial perspective. The course first examines where mobile service providers are today in terms of their network infrastructure and what they do to prepare for the growth in mobile broadband. Discussion then turns to the concepts of LTE and 4G and how this new network technology will look and work in mobile networks. The session is highly interactive and culminates with you building a business case for LTE and the potential services it can offer.

Business decision makers and non technical personnel who need to gain an overview of LTE and its place in modern telecoms networks.

Course Outline

Divided into 4 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Mobile Broadband - Meeting the Challenge (2 hours)

  • Traffic trends - HSDPA, smart phones, apps, multimedia and other services.
  • Network Costs -the big ticket items, spectrum, the radio network and core network.
  • What does a real mobile network look like?
  • Controlling Costs - maintaining revenue with exponential traffic growth, why is IP so important?
  • IMT Advanced - a vision of 4G, spectrum and the main players.
  • The 3GPP - LTE timelines, aims, rationale and performance.

Section 2: From 3G to 4G (1 hour)

  • Designed for Mobile Broadband - everything over IP and IP over everything.
  • Future Networks - what will 4G networks look like?
  • Migrating from today’s 3G network to a 4G network - new sites and new technology.
  • 4G Spectrum - what will service providers get and how much will it cost?
  • The 4G Network - what are the numbers? Capex and Opex, the effect on the bottom line.

Section 3: LTE in a Nutshell (1 hour)

  • The LTE Network - the mobile, the radio network and core network.
  • Connecting, moving and downloading.
  • Interworking - other network technologies, hybrid handsets, 2G, 3G and HSPA.
  • What about WiMAX - where does WiMAX fit into the mix?
  • Emerging markets - the challenges of bridging the digital divide.

Section 4: Selling 4G and all it has to Offer (3 hours)

  • 4G service - what does the customer want?
  • LTE from the drawing board to the high street - market, design and costs.
  • You build the business case - segment the market, define your services and cost the network. This final session is interactive and involves you working in syndicates to build a basic 4G business case based on LTE.
