GSM Air Interface (1 days or 6 hours)

Following on from the Engineering the Mobile Network course, this course focuses on the 2G radio interface and in so doing discusses in detail the physical layer, frame formats, protocols etc prior to explaining the mechanisms which are employed as a mobile enters the network and makes and receives calls and text messages. Finally, the course explains the cell selection and re-selection procedures in addition to describing the various types of handovers and interworking with UMTS.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for network engineers and radio planners requiring a detailed understanding of the GSM air interface or technical managers involved in the development and operation of the GSM radio network.

Course Outline

Divided into 6 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Introducing the GSM Air Interface (1 hour)

  • Frequency Allocations around the World - GSM, E-GSM, GSM-R.
  • Frequency Reuse and Cell Planning Issues.
  • Modulation Techniques - GMSK and 8PSK.
  • TDMA - Frames, Multiframes and Superframes.
