GPRS Air Interface (1 day or 6 hours)

Following on from the key principles explained in the Engineering the Mobile Network course, this course sets out to focus on the GPRS Air Interface. In so doing, the different logical and physical channels are addressed prior to introducing the different protocols which operate over the air interface and the key signalling messages. The course then moves on to address how resources are allocated for both GPRS and EGPRS operation. To aid understanding, the course includes exercises and analysis of real network traces.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for research and development staff requiring instruction in the operation of the GPRS Air Interface, in addition to engineers involved in the development and management of GPRS radio access networks.

Course Outline

Divided into 4 sections, the topics covered will include:

Section 1: Logical and Physical Channels (1.5 hours)

  • TDMA Operation and Radio, Physical and Logical Channels.
  • Burst Structures, Modulation, Coding and Interleaving.
  • Multiframes - 51 Frame and 52 Frame.
  • GPRS Timing Advance Operation.

Section 2: GPRS Signalling Procedures and Protocols (1.5 hours)

  • The GPRS Air Interface Protocols Part 1 - SNDCP and LLC.
  • GPRS Signalling Procedures - GPRS Attach.
  • Security Procedures.
  • Dealing with QoS - Reliability, Delay, Throughput and Precedence.

Section 3: GPRS Resource Allocation and Operation (1.5 hours)

  • The GPRS Air Interface Protocols Part 2 - RLC and MAC.
  • Uplink and Downlink Resource Allocation - Dynamic, Extended and Exclusive.
  • Uplink and Downlink Packet Data Transfer - TBF and Packet Ack / Nack.
  • Error Coding - CS1 to CS4.

Section 4: EGPRS Resource Allocation and Operation (1.5 hours)

  • EDGE - Introducing 8PSK Modulation.
  • The Modified GPRS Air Interface Protocols - RLC and MAC.
  • EGPRS Operation - Modifications and Capabilities.
  • Coding Puncturing and Interleaving - MCS1 to MCS9.
