Delivering IPTV(2 Days or 12hours)

As Service Providers seek to diversify their service offering through initiatives such as triple play, IPTV is experiencing a significant surge in popularity around the globe. This course is designed to provide an end to end view of an IPTV network, defining the key incentives for migration to or adoption of IPTV. The course will focus on the fundamental protocols associated with both Multicast and VoD delivery, in addition to discussing key topics such as network architecture, media coding, QoS / QoE provision and security.

  • Triple and Quadruple Play.
  • IPTV Global Market.
  • Multicast IPTV.
  • VoD (Video on Demand) IPTV.
  • IPTV Challenges.
  • IPTV Standards Bodies - ITU-T, ETSI TISPAN, HGI, OIPF, DVB, 3GPP.

Section 2: IPTV Network Architecture (1.5 hours)

  • IP Overview.
  • Terminal Device - STB and HGW requirements.
  • Access Network - Carrier Ethernet, xDSL, FTTx, PON, WiMAX, Wi-Fi.
  • Core Distribution Network - MPLS.
  • 3GPP IMS and ETSI TISPAN.
  • Video SHE.

Section 3: IP Multicasting and IGMP (1.5 hours)

  • IP Multicasting Basics - addressing, groups and routing procedure.
  • Layer 2 Multicasting - Ethernet Multicasting.
  • IGMP - versions, queries and reports.
  • PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast).
  • PIM-SM (Sparse Mode) and PIM-SSM (Source Specific Multicast).
  • RPF (Reverse Path Forwarding).

Section 4: VoD and RTSP (1 hour)

  • RTSP Capabilities and Properties.
  • RTSP Methods - Describe, Setup, Play, Pause, Teardown etc.
  • RTSP Responses.
  • Example VoD session establishment.

Section 5: SIP and SDP (1 hour)

  • SIP Basics - capabilities, IMS and IPTV.
  • SIP Methods and Responses - Invite, Register, Options etc.
  • SIP Architecture - proxies, registrars and redirects.
  • Registration and Session Establishment.
  • SDP Background and Capabilities - SIP and RTSP payload.
  • Session and Media Level Parameters.
  • MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension).

Section 6: Real time Transport Protocol (1 hour)

  • RTP Header Functionality - sequence numbers, timestamps, SSRC etc.
  • RTP Payload Formats - vc-1, MP4-ES etc.
  • RTCP - sender and receiver reports, SDES, BYE.
  • Lip Synchronization in RTP.
  • RTP Header Compression.

Section 7: IPTV Codecs (1 hour)

  • Media Capture and Playout Process - sampling and digitization, compression, packetization etc.
  • Audio and Video Compression Techniques.
  • MPEG-2 Basics.
  • MPEG-4.
  • VC-1.

Section 8: QoS and QoE Provision (1.5 hours)

  • Threats to QoS in IP Based Networks.
