The Diameter protocol provides a more robust and flexible service than the traditional RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) architecture, and plugs many of the shortfalls in RADIUS, particularly in the area of mobile communications and billing. This module discusses the concepts of Diameter including its architecture, the base protocol and the additional applications covering Mobile IP, Accounting, Network Access, and Strong Security. Information is also included as to where this protocol may reasonably be employed with respect to mobile networks.
