ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) & MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) - 3 hours
Providing the Layer 2 function on many of the interfaces within a UMTS network, ATM based networks are able to support varied traffic types. This module describes the operation of ATM with reference to network architecture and cell structure. The various AAL (ATM Adaptation Layers) are discussed in terms of the services they support and their mode of operation.

The module also describes the concept of the virtual connections - switched, permanent etc. in addition to the signalling involved in establishing them - B-ISDN (Broadband - Integrated Services Digital Network). Finally, the operation of an MPLS network, using ATM as the transport mechanism along with a discussion of the various label switching protocols that can be employed. |
